In Kenya we often hear the phrase among several women and men, “I don’t like makeup.”

This abhorrence of makeup stems from the belief makeup equals a fake, garish artificial look. However, not all makeup will leave you looking like a hip-hop musician at a concert.

Popular among brides and everyday beauties, is the no-make-up make-up look. Here is how to achieve a flawlessly natural appearance while accentuating your best features and covering up your flaws.

Start with a clean palette: Cleanse your skin and exfoliate where necessary to reveal your natural glow. Then apply a good moisturiser and a primer. Priming is vital as it covers fine lines and ridges, enabling make-up to glide naturally without appearing cakey. Some beauty schools advocate mixing a dab of primer with foundation before applying it directly. Either way, do not forget to prime.

Hide your flaws: The no-makeup look is all about radiance. To achieve this look, apply concealer judiciously to cover any spots, scars, discoloration and under-eye bags.

Use foundation sparingly: Apply foundation on your T-zone using your fingertips or a brush. Use a beauty blender sponge to spread it out and even out the coverage with a light touch. These sponges are ideal because they absorb excess oil from your makeup while depositing colour seamlessly onto your skin. Avoid applying heavy foundation and resist the tendency to cover the entire surface area of your face with foundation. For a natural look, stick to the middle part of your face where the light hits your skin, and blend, blend, blend it out.

Bronze for an expertly contoured look: Dust a bronzer of your shade onto the bridge of your nose, cupid’s bow and along your cheekbones.

Use the right powder: Leave your heavy powders at home for this look. Instead, dust a minimal amount of translucent powder to finish the look and set the pigments. Avoid overdoing the powder as this will lead to caking and an ashy look.

The eyes have it: Apply a natural golden or matt brown pigment onto your eyelids. Contour the lids with a darker chocolate shade. Finally, use an ultra-thin brush to line your eyes with a black gel or liquid liner. Finish with a sweep of mascara.

Perfect your pout: Exfoliate and hydrate your lips first to remove unsightly lines and flaking skin. Omit lipstick and lipliner, and instead put on a moisture-rich lip gloss in a flattering shade of pink. Your no-makeup makeup is now complete!
