Everyone has natural oils on their scalp known as sebum. There are times when the balance is thrown off leading to excess oil on the scalp. Some of those scenarios are hormonal imbalances, over-washing or washing too little or even using too much hair product. The excess oil clogs your pores and stunts normal hair growth and aside from that, greasy hair is really hard to style. Other issues that come with it are dandruff and scalp acne.

Easy home remedies are a great solution to this common hair problem and the best part is, the ingredients you need can be found right in your kitchen. 

Black tea

Black tea is a good source of caffeine and tannic acid which help to control the excess oil and keep your hair healthy. It has many benefits so you’ll definitely get healthy, shiny and voluminous hair the more you use it.

Brew two tea bags of strong tea, sieve the leaves to prevent them from getting stuck in your hair and dilute the mixture. Once it has cooled down, pour it on your hair making sure all areas are covered and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing.

Egg yolk mask

Egg yolk is also great for oil control because of sulfur and for added vitamins like vitamin E and biotin. Its properties tone down the sebum and restore a healthy shine too. You can do a plain egg yolk mask occasionally if you don’t mind the strong eggy smell. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice, which also boosts oil control and balances the strong smell. Let the mask work its way through for a few minutes before washing properly.

Apple cider vinegar rinse

If you’ve heard of the ACV rinse, you know that it comes with amazing hair benefits. It’s a natural cleanser that removes oil and product buildup from your pores. It also restores the pH balance and eliminates bacteria as well.

Dilute a few spoons of the vinegar into a bowl of water and pour it onto your hair after washing and conditioning. Massage it well and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing.

Yoghurt mask

This is a great, gentle cleanser that removes excess oil and dead skin cells from your scalp. It also helps to maintain a healthy pH level since it’s close to the natural pH of the scalp and it’s great for a moisture-oil balance.

Dampen your hair a little and apply the yoghurt. Massage it from your roots to your ends, cover with a shower cap for 20 minutes then rinse with warm water.

Cornstarch

This is more of a quick go-to remedy for an oily scalp. It’s a natural absorbent which is very powerful so you have to be careful when using it. Don’t be tempted to pour the powder directly on your hair from its container. If you pour an excessive amount, it will dehydrate your hair giving it a pale ash look. Instead, pinch then spread it bit by bit in sections and concentrate on your roots. The last step would be massaging it in to spread it evenly.

Arrowroot powder

This works in a similar way to cornstarch. It’s also highly absorbent and you need to apply it carefully on your roots then massage it onto the rest of your hair. Work in sections to avoid overpowering your hair.

Green tea also has great benefits when it comes to oil control. It tones down the sebum production and gives you a healthy shine since it also has caffeine and antioxidants. Prepare it the same way you would black tea and let it sit on your hair for a few minutes. Rinse with cool water when you’re done.
