Taxpayers will have to raise Sh17 million as a send-off package for former Speaker of Senate, Ekwee Ethuro.

Hon Ethuro was the first Speaker of the Senate under the new Constitution and he is entitled to payment which is calculated as a sum equal to his one year’s salary. This is paid for the one term that he served in office. This translates to Sh1, 056, 000 per month for the former speaker.

According to the Retirement Benefits Act, 2015, Hon Ethuro is entitled to a pay of Sh15, 840,000 equivalent to his pay as speaker for one year, taxpayers will also pay Ethuro a monthly fuel allowance of Sh198, 000.

Other than the lump sum pay, other retirement benefits for the former Senate Speaker include a saloon vehicle and a four-wheel vehicle both which are replaceable once every four years as well as the fuel allowance which equals 15% of the current office holder’s monthly salary.

The retirement package also includes two drivers, two security guards, one personal assistant, one secretary, one housekeeper, one senior support staff, one gardener and one cleaner.

Taxpayers will also carter for Hon Ethuro’s medical and hospital cover together with that of his spouse, providing for both local and overseas medical services. The former Senate Speaker and his wife will also have diplomatic passports and they will access the VIP lounge at all airports in Kenya.

Mr Ethuro was a long serving Turkana Central MP before he was elected as the Senate Speaker in 2013. He lost his bid to retain his seat as Senate Speaker to former Bungoma Governor, Kenneth Lusaka. Hon Ethuro was arguable dumped by Jubilee Party for his questionable loyalty.
