His tenure as the first president of the Judiciary under the 2010 constitution is not shy of direct stabs at cartels and incompetent politicians. In what looked like a best saved for the last, he described local politicians as self-centered before announcing his new job as a Commonwealth Special Envoy to Maldives.

From the new judge of the East African Court of Justice, Aaron Ringera to the green law student, Mr. Paul Andrew; the Judicial Service Commission was not short of applicants to fill the Chief Justice position. Kenya had to brace for a showdown.

It was a show of wits when Professor Makau Mutua took the hot seat. Grilled by the Attorney General, Professor Githu Muigai, his past utterance on the validity of the election of Uhuru Kenyatta were to soon haunt him.

History will not be quick to forget the small fish that swam in the high tides. Mr. Paul Andrew Kangeni lived to the quote of Fredrih Schiller ‘Mandkind is made great or little by its own will.’ The law student’s date with the vetting commission was not to last half an hour. However, acres of media space were earmarked to highlight his story of courage.

Justice Aaron Ringera, his judicial history not withstanding was lucky to be given a day with the commission after his application was turned down before. He was put to task to explain his decision to send home twenty three staff of the high court over corruption allegations.

The results were soon to be out. Popular judge, Dr. Smokin Wanjala was to fall second to little known Court of Appeal judge, Mr. David Maraga. Eloquent Professor Makau Mutua was to come third of the eleven applicants.

Glare and focus was soon to shine on the new chief justice nominee.

We are however waiting with baited breaths if he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor who had struck an accord with the young of the country. With the appending of the signature by the president standing between Mr. Maraga and his first day as Kenya’s chief Justice, the youth are already skeptic if he will match to ease of connection his former had with them.

The vibrancy of social media and its need can never be underscored in today’s world. Questions are already being asked if Mr. Maraga will live up to the dominance of Dr. Mutunga on such outlets as Twitter and Facebook. These new media have been predominantly perceived as the platform for the modern youths.

Only time will be tell what the new Chief Justice has up his sleeves for the incessantly vibrant youths of this country.
