Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyongo's ‘ex-boyfriend' is among The Sundance Institute 2015 winners.
The US based Somali national won the Sundance Institute's Global Filmmaking Award, in recognition and support of emerging independent filmmakers from around the world.
The award worth Sh900,000 will be used to fund K'naan's documentary, which he will direct, titled 'The Poet'.
The story is based on war-torn Somalia where an artistic orphan named Maano goes on a dangerous journey to Mogadishu in order to find his long-lost sister.
K'naan is no stranger to the Sundance Institute, he is an alumnus of the Institute's Screenwriters and Directors lab.
