Often it is said that first impressions last, and while it’s important to make impressions on dates, casual meet-ups and at events, the office place is yet another sphere where you are expected to make daily impressions.

Recently many companies has resulted into coming up with a set of rules when it comes to outfits and all employees must follow them.

Here are the top 5 worst types of clothes you can wear in an office with formal dress code:

1. Generally Unsuitable Clothing Items for the Office

There are some extravagant clothes that are totally unacceptable in a corporate setting, such as the summer casual staples. Flip flops, tube tops or clothes with excessive cleavage are certainly a big no-no when you go to the office – after all, your clothes add to your overall image and remember that you are working in a formal environment. Also, avoid transparent clothing/sheer clothing, animal prints, fishnets, negligees or tight tops and pants. A woman/man can look beautiful and attractive in formal clothing as well – you can be sexy if you show less, you do not need to go overboard!

2. Wrinkled Shirts or the Same Outfit as Yesterday

There is nothing more unprofessional than wrinkled shirts, and many bosses can take it as an insult if you show up to work all wrinkled and messy. You can easily solve this problem by ironing your shirts with a high-quality steam iron for a couple of minutes, right before leaving for work.

Same applies to the clothes you wore the day before: not only is it unprofessional to show up to work wearing the same outfit, but it will also leave the impression that you did not sleep at home last night.

3. Ripped Jeans and T-Shirts with Offensive Messages

Ripped jeans are anything but formal and they are designed for rebellious teenagers rather than for a businesswoman, therefore make sure not to wear them at work. Leave the ripped jeans and the graphic t-shirts for the weekend, and remember never to wear t-shirts that make rude jokes or religious and/or political references, as you may offend your co-workers, your customers or even worse – your boss! You need to be as impartial and as unbiased as possible, and this refers not only to language but also to clothing.

4. Wrong Shoes

Your shoes must match your overall attire, and that is a known fact. Avoid wearing nightclub shoes or extreme platforms at the office. If you want to opt for heels, then choose short-heel shoes, peep toe shoes or shoes with pointy toes. If you work in a corporate setting, then the chances are that you will have to move around a lot, this is why it is essential to choose comfortable shoes. Walking around in 6-inch heels would not only be very painful, but very bothersome as well – your co-workers do not need to hear it whenever you walk down the hall.

5. Clothes That Generally Show Too Much Skin

Besides the clothing items mentioned above, try to avoid clothes that show too much skin or show your piercings or tattoos, if any. Unfortunately, many companies regard tattoos as very unprofessional and conservative customers may feel offended as well. If you have piercings, take them out when you go to work and wear long-sleeved clothes to cover your tattoos. Freedom of expression is a human right that must be respected, but why allow such a detail impact your future job prospects when you can easily prevent that with the right clothing?
