Uhuru instructs govt to procure 500 beds from two innovators who showcased their work

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday instructed the government to procure 500 beds from two innovators who make hospital beds locally.

The two, Mungai Gathogo (26) and Joseph Muhinja (35), from Kiambu County, were lauded by many Kenyans online after they showcased their work.

The beds have a drip stand, a mesh for housing an oxygen cylinder, a head raising gear and a feeding table.

The President’s Delivery Unit stated that the beds, which are made from locally sourced materials, will be subjected to standardization tests by KEBS.

Mungai and Muhinja who have currently employed seven youth, promised to hire more young people to ensure the order will be delivered in one and half month’s time.

“They will be a vital aid to public hospitals that are reeling under the pressure of COVID-19 related hospital admissions,” tweeted the PDU.

In recent weeks, President Kenyatta has emphasized the ‘Buy Kenya Build Kenya’ initiative which aims at promoting locally manufactured goods.

In line with this, the Government will also link up local manufacturers with SME fund to raise capital for start-ups and to expand existing businesses in a drive towards the realization of the Manufacturing pillar under the Big Four agenda.

Covid-19 cases are on the rise and recently, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe stated that counties need to improve on health care since no patients will be airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.
