The Catholic Church has called for sobriety when raiding alcohol dens and premises. Archbishop Peter Kairo said although the church supports ongoing crackdown on illicit and unregulated alcohol, it did not support the method employed by government agents and politicians.
This follows a recent raid organised by Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu where property of unknown value was destroyed as youths went on rampage and drinking spree.
Monday, Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) also complained in a paid newspaper advert that a number of legitimate alcoholic establishments were being targeted.
“These unwarranted acts are criminal, unjustified and totally uncalled for. There must be sanity, sobriety and formalised channels of dealing will illicit alcohol,” said the KBL statement.
Kairo warned those charged with initiating the crackdown against engaging in hooliganism and looting of private property. “Let us be modest when conducting these raids. The authority concerned and security agents must make sure licensed premises are protected,” he advised.
