A man who pleaded guilty of assaulting his mother has been jailed for one year.

Richard Sigei, 30, assaulted his mother Sarah Chumo on March 5, at Kabungut, Bomet Central Division.

Chief Inspector Charles Ngai told the court that on the material day, the accused went home and demanded food.

But his mother served him tea as she had not cooked at the time.

He claimed the tea was tasteless and demanded more sugar, which was not available.

"Kurgat picked a stool and hit his mother causing injury. She was treated at Silibwet Health Centre and discharged," the officer told the court.

In mitigation, Kurgat pleaded for leniency saying he was drunk.

Stepfather to serve 20 years for defilement

A Keroka court has jailed a child defiler for 20 years.

Charles Nyaboe Onchangu was convicted of the offence he committed on November 7, last year, at Nyankoba, Masaba District.

Onchangu is a stepfather to the 14-year-old girl. He also faced another charge of indecent assault.

The girl told the court that she was alone at home and had locked herself in the house. The accused came at 5:00pm and requested for a basin, which she told him was outside.

He then asked for a matchbox and she slipped it through a gap at the door. He further asked for a metal bar and requested to enter the house.

She obliged and he immediately held her neck, hands and dragged her to bed where he defiled her.

In the morning, the girl informed the assistant chief who took her to her uncles who later reported the matter to the police.

During cross-examination, the girl told the court that the other children were asleep.

She said the accused also threatened to kill her if she dared scream.

Keroka Resident Magistrate Joseph Were noted that defilement cases were on the rise adding stiff penalties were required to protect the young girls.

Man jailed for beating father over land

A man was jailed for six months by a Nakuru court for assaulting his father over a piece of land.

Dickson Kipkorir pleaded guilty when he appeared before Nakuru Principal Magistrate John Onyiego.

The court heard that the complainant, Wilson Ngetich, was in his house with another son when the first-born son joined them.

He complained that his younger brother had inherited a bigger portion than him saying it was unfair since he had a larger family.

His father insisted he had given him enough land. Kipkorir then hit him with a walking stick.

His brother raised alarm and neighbours arrested him. Kipkorir pleaded for leniency saying he was drunk and never meant to hurt his father.

Onyiengo, however, said that his offence required a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent.

"You seem very bitter with your father. Hitting your father is wrong and deserves no fine. You will serve six months in prison," Onyiego ruled.

Phone robber jailed for four years

A Kilgoris court has jailed a man for four years for stealing a mobile phone valued at Sh5,500.

Wesley Cheruiyot Koech pleaded guilty before Senior Resident Magistrate Roselyn Oganyo for the offence he committed at Abossi, Trans Mara.

The court heard that on March 9, Joyce Cherotich was heading home from Sotik when someone stopped her near Abossi Police Post.

She refused to stop but the accused drew a sword threatening to cut her.

Cherotich raised alarm after the accused ran into a nearby bush where members of the public found him hiding.

In mitigation, Koech said he was drunk and did not know what he was doing.

In the same court, two men admitted killing a waterbuck and roasting its meat saying they were hungry.

They were fined Sh1,000 each for being in possession of game meat. Wilson Kirui and Philip Rono committed the offence on March 14, at Koisagat, Trans Mara District.

Sufuria thief put on probation

A middle-aged man was arraigned before a Thika court for stealing a sufuria (cooking pan).

John Waiganjo committed the offence on March 14, at Milimani, Thika District.

The accused pleaded guilty before Thika Principal Magistrate, Mr Anthony Kaniaru.

The complainant, Lucy Wangui Waiharo, had gone to the shamba and left several sufurias outside the house. She returned in the afternoon and found one sufuria missing.

Neighbours told her that the accused had been seen with the utensil but a search at the accused’s house did not yield anything.

"I had taken the sufuria that I may use it to cook but I did not return it," he said in mitigation.

"May be you do not know what is going on. I, therefore, recommend that you be put under probation until March 30," the magistrate ruled.
