Experts in the Ministry of Energy are exploring ways of storing biogas under pressure in specially designed polythene bags for domestic use.

With the rising costs of cooking gas, the success of the project will be a relief for many Kenyans grappling with high prices of fuel.

The success of the exploration would mean reduced spending on fuels for many homes.

Bukura Energy Centre Manager James Onzere said the move was prompted by rising costs of natural gas, which is becoming out of reach for most wananchi.

"Biogas is one of the renewable energies that can be used for cooking, lighting and welding if stored under pressure to strengthen its power," he explained.

Storage bags costly

Mr Onzere said they store the gas in collection bags, with each bag costing around Sh8,000.

"We supply schools, colleges and households. Production cost is less when we produce gas in high quantities," he stated.

He said for domestic purposes, the gas is produced, based on the family size and its use.

"For example, for 12 people, they need between 12 cubic meters to 32 cubic meters," he added.

Speaking at his office, Onzere said they have installed the plant targeting various local colleges. He said initial results are overwhelming. He said the gas is also used to run generators.

At the same time, the manger noted that they have introduced a new biogas plant called the Fixed Dom Digester.

"This is a floating drum dug nine by nine feet under ground. It has an inlet and outlet digester, which releases waste after the gas is produced," he said. "The waste is then recycled. Many homes have benefited from the new plant." He said the new plant is easy to operate and is now also being used in schools.

Onzere while addressing students who toured the area to learn about the project situated near Bukura Agricultural Training College, said renewable energy is becoming an alternative source of power especially among farmers.
