Sony has launched a range of three-dimensional (3D) products in Kenya that it said would enable it consolidate its position in the consumer electronics in the region.
Through its subsidiary Sony Gulf FZE, which markets Sony products in Africa and Middle East, the firm said while East Africa is yet to embrace concept of home entertainment, it would eventually catch up as this is the trend sweeping across the globe.
"We did not expect much growth from LCD, but it has grown in a phenomenal manner and the same will be the case with 3D products," said Osamu Miura, managing director Sony Gulf.
He spoke recently in Nairobi when the company launched 3D high definition televisions and a range of other products that would compliment the TV set.
"Unlike 3D experiences in the past, which were characterised by objects coming towards the viewer, the emphasis has now shifted to adding an element of depth. It is about subtlety and detail, to engage the viewer," said Miura about the newly launched TV.
To get the ‘3D experience’, consumers will wear electronic glasses that open and close rapidly in time with images designed for the right and left eye, creating a three-dimensional effect.
The 3D products are premium priced, with the TVs retailing at over Sh300,000 while the eyewear that enhances the viewing goes for Sh8,000.Despite the sky-high prices, Sony executives are the products will sell in the local market.
"It will be a big sensation in this region," said Rajeev Pallippamadam, East African area sales manager for Sony Gulf. The firm joins other players like Samsung that have launched similar products in Kenya.
