Naivasha, Kenya: Hundreds of motorists spent several hours on the road along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway at Gilgil Weigh Bridge following a huge traffic jam that snaked for more than 10 kilometers on both sides Thursday morning.

The jam had been caused by the breakdown of two trailers, with close to 40 tones of luggage, on the road near Gilgil Weighbridge.

This prompted overlapping by some vehicles to avoid the crisis, which has worsened since Wednesday night.

Police called on motorists to be patient as mechanics worked on the trucks.

Traffic commandant Charlton Muriithi said they had sent more personnel to the area to divert the traffic flow and manage the crisis.

“It is complicated because the trailers broke down on a bridge that is near the weighbridge. We urge motorists to be patient because we cannot even tow the trailer which is almost 40 tones,” said Muriithi.

He said it would take time to remove the trailers from the area.
