Sex workers plying their trade along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi were forced on Monday night to contribute for their colleague who came to "work" with her child.
The incident happened near Uganda House next to former Simmers Restaurant where the twilight girl, who claimed to have come from Githurai 44 with her young child, said she had nobody to leave the child with at home.
"The house help left without notice after I failed to pay her for two months. I don't have money and I need to feed my child and my other two children wh are upcountry living with my mother," she said.
The lady added that life had become very difficult and that even the commercial sex business was no longer lucrative as there were no clients. Her colleagues contributed some money for her bus fare and also bought some food for her and the baby.
After the Sh700 donation, the lady went back to her house. "As other sectors are affected by low business, we are also hard hit. We will have to shift and go back upcountry to do farming. There's totally no business here," one of them said.
She said that majority of them risk contracting diseases like pneumonia or breathing difficulties as a result of exposing themselves to cold weather compounded by poor nutrition.
