Kenya Power and Lighting Company has attributed the latest blackout to a system disturbance. This comes as parts of North Rift region experienced a power blackout on the evening of Tuesday, July 26 2022.

Power outage have been reported in the whole of Kapsabet - Nandi Hills, Nandi County, Uasin Gishu Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia and West Pokot counties.

Other regions that have experienced the blackout include Nairobi, Bungoma and Kakamega.

The blackout was reported at 8:20pm, shortly after the start of the Presidential Debate.

Kenyans took on social media to protest the blackout.

Unconfirmed reports however allude to interruption in the Muhorini gas turbine.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company issued a statement shortly afterwards.

"At 8:12pm this evening, we experienced a system disturbance at the Kisumu - Muhoroni high voltage transmission power line that tripped several power circuits and affected power generation from Muhoroni Gas Turbine Station and Turkwell Hydropower Station. The shortfall caused power outages in parts of Western, South Nyanza, North Rift, Central Rift and Nairobi North.

Our system engineers immediately commenced restoration works and normalised power to all areas by 9:07pm." the statement reads.

Earlier on, Kenya Power and Lighting Company indicated issued an outage notice scheduled for tomorrow, July 27 in North Rift, Western, South Nyanza, Mt. Kenya and Coast regions. The scheduled blackouts will run during various timelines from 9am till 5pm.
