Nairobi: A suspected gangster and a passenger in a matatu were on Wednesday night shot dead.
The two were shot as police pursued gunmen who had robbed an M-Pesa shop in Kayole, Nairobi.
The suspects had hopped into a matatu, which had stopped to pick up passengers.
Another passenger was shot and wounded during the incident.
Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said his officers opened fire after one of the gunmen shot at them from the matatu.

"In the process, one passenger was fatally wounded while another one sustained serious injuries," said Koome.
One of the suspects sustained injuries and escaped, but his body was later found along a dark alley.
Koome said it was unfortunate passengers in the matatu were affected in the confrontation.
Passengers who survived the shooting said police opened fire in total disregard that many innocent people were in the matatu.
Elsewhere, a suspected burglar was shot dead along Ngina Road in Dagoretti, Nairobi. Police recovered stolen electronic goods from him.
