Jose Mourinho is confident Manchester United will make a statement signing during his first summer transfer window.

Sources say Mourinho expects United to clinch a deal that ‘will make everyone sit up straight’ as he assembles a potential title-winning squad.

Mourinho has prioritised signing Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba to the extent he vetoed a move for Miralem Pjanic , who joined Juve from Roma, although it is understood the Portuguese is pessimistic about United’s chances amid intense competition for the France international and his world-record asking price.

Mourinho is intent on clinching at least four signings in his first summer transfer window as United manager. Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly became the Portuguese’s first arrival and Mourinho has also targeted a right midfielder, as well as a striker and a central midfielder.
