Norway-based Kenyan band Matata is taking a bold new step, transitioning from music to theatre with their upcoming performance titled "Poverty Slaps, But We Slap Back Harder."
This ambitious theatrical piece goes beyond the traditional confines of a play, offering a raw and personal narrative that draws heavily from the band's own experiences.
According to the band's Instagram post, "Poverty Slaps, But We Slap Back Harder" is not just a performance, it is the truth of their journey, laid bare for the world to witness.
The band describes the play as the fire that has burned within them since they were young, running barefoot on dusty streets, dreaming of something more. Their journey, marked by tears, struggles, and moments of doubt, reflects the harsh realities of coming from a place where survival often takes precedence over passion. Yet, they refused to let their struggles define them.
"It's the fire that's burned in our chests since the days we ran barefoot on dusty streets, dreaming of something bigger. It is every tear we've shed, every fight we have fought, every moment we thought of giving up but chose to keep pushing," they said.
The band members have turned their pain into art, transforming their hardships into fuel for creation. In doing so, they've used their voices and their platform to craft something the world cannot ignore.
"Poverty Slaps, But We Slap Back Harder" is a deeply personal exploration of the band's past, fears, victories, and failures. The play is about more than just Matata, it speaks to the shared struggles and triumphs of all people. It's about the unbreakable bond of resilience, the power of love, loss, and the unyielding will to fight against adversity.
"It is not just about Matata, it is about us, as human beings, as artists, as fighters. It is about resilience, love, loss, hope, and the unbreakable bond that holds us together," they posted.
