Student risks losing varsity slot for lack of Sh49,000 fees

A student who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination last year may miss out on university admission due to lack of fees.

Rasick Hamisi Ogalo took his exams at the Saye Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County and scored a B- (minus) of 53 points.

How was expected to report to the Maseno University on Monday to pursue a Bachelor of Science, Health Records and Information Management degree.

However, he is yet to report after he failed to raise the Sh49,000.

Ogalo cannot even apply for a loan from the Higher Education Loans Board because he is yet to get the university admission number that an applicant must have to qualify for funding.

The student from Saye Village, North Kamagak in Kasipul Constituency, says he struggled through primary and secondary schools, especially since his father died in 2007.

His mother Florence Atieno has been ailing for more than two years.

Ogalo is now appealing to well-wishers to come to his aid so he doesn't lose his place at the university.

"It was just by the mercy of my former secondary school principal, who allowed me to continue with my studies with fees arrears, that I sat the KCSE examination,” he said.
