Two Meru County towns will benefit from Sh2.2 billion water projects. Speaking at Gakoromone market, Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui said the projects will be established in the county headquarters and Maua.
More than Sh1 billion will go towards overhauling Meru town waste water works with the compound hosting one oxidation pond and three maturation ponds being back filled and the facilities moved over 10km to a 40-acre piece of land.
“We are happy that the African Development Bank has agreed to finance this project which will improve the capacity from a town of 20,000 residents in 1974 to 174,000 residents currently,” Mr Chelugui added.
He announced that the project will kick off in the next two months. A Sh1.2 billion water supply and waste water treatment works will kick off immediately to benefit Maua – Meru’s second largest town.
Chelugui said the ministry is seeking funds to construct the Kithino mega dam to ensure regular supply of clean water to residents. Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi said the county government will clean up and expand the Gakoromone market.
