Kitui, Kenya: Kitui County Government has set up measures to help the region’s local communities adapt to the negative effects of climate change.
The adaptation measures through the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Minerals Investment Development (MEEMID) have already supported planting of more than 100,000 tree seedlings during the 2013 October–December rains.
The county’s minister in charge of the docket, George Mulatya, said Kenya Adaptation to Climate Change in Arid Lands (KACCAL) with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNEP) is piloting and implementing adaptation activities in Kyuso and Mumoni in Mwingi North Sub County.
Mulatya said the county government has constituted a County Climate Committee in preparation to manage the soon to be established Adaptation Fund.
