The most worrying social problem in Kenya at the moment is terrorism. The Government is allocating a huge chunk of its budget towards the fight against this vice considered a threat to human existence.
But countries are beginning to learn that war on terrorism cannot be won through military action, but through deradicalising indoctrinated youths. Bit by bit, this change in approach is proving effective.
And just like terrorism, the second vice that the Government is grappling with is corruption. So huge and disturbing is the vice that US President Barack Obama, during his recent visit to Kenya, said his government will help Kenya fight corruption. This means the world’s super power is aware of our inability to end this vice on our own.
So embedded in our institutions is corruption that competency is no longer our common denominator when hiring staff.
Notwithstanding the Government’s effort to kick corruption out of Kenya, methinks this war is far from being won.
