Tusker forward Jesse Were scored his second hat trick in a row as the brewers thrashed Sofapaka 5-0 in Saturday’s Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match at Machakos Municipal Stadium.

In Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars beat Ushuru 2-0 while Chemelil returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) while Muhoroni ended Bandari’s three-match winning run.

At Machakos, Were took his goals tally to 16 and maintained his status as the league’s top scorer for the second week in a row.

Were scored in the 10th, 15th and 30th minute before Eugene Asike and Noah Wafula added one each.

Speaking after the match Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe blamed the huge loss on the fact that a good number of their players left.

“There were too many gaps at the back and this is due to the fact we lost our best players. We need to do a lot of work to be able to recover,” he said. His Tusker counterpart Francis Kimanzi said the win was a big motivation for his side considering that he has never won at Machakos Stadium.

In Muhoroni, the hosts beat Bandari 1-0 with Wycliffe Ochomo scoring in the 81st minute.

In Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars defeated Ushuru 2-0 to narrow the gap between them and defending champions and league leaders Gor Mahia.

Eric Apul drew the first blood for the soldiers in the 20th minute after corner kick to give the soldiers a slender lead going into the breather.

Ushuru missed a penalty in the 43rd minute after Charles Okwemba blasted over the bar although Ulinzi custodian James Saruni had guessed right. Oscar Wamalwa netted the second goal in the in the 65th minute from a move initiated by Stephen Ocholla.

In Chemelil, hosts Chemelil Sugar bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

Chemelil Sugar’s efforts paid off in the seventh minute with newly signed Tusker import Joshua Oyoo notching the all-important goal.
