ODM MPs who defied the party’s position during the grilling of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru over corruption allegations at the National Youth Service (NYS) risk disciplinary actions.
While Jubilee MPs solidly defended Waiguru over alleged procurement irregularities and an attempt to steal Sh826 million at the NYS, ODM legislators openly tore into each other in the full glare of television cameras.
Some even joined their Jubilee colleagues in shouting down their ODM counterparts, who tried in vain to put the CS to task over the allegations. ODM Director of Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi, who walked out in protest during the grilling by the House Departmental Committee on Finance, Trade and Planning, now says MPs Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache South) and Ken Obura (Kisumu Central) risk being punished for ‘betraying the party’.
“ODM’s position is that Waiguru should step aside to allow for investigations into the scandals at NYS. Party MPs who joined Jubilee in shielding her went against the party,” Wandayi told The Standard on Sunday.
“Every action has consequences and the two MPs should be prepared for disciplinary measures. They should also prepare to face the wrath of voters during the next general election,” he said.

ODM is particularly worried about differences exhibited by its MPs given the Opposition’s weak numerical strength in the National Assembly. “It was embarrassing to the party that its members shouted at each other before television cameras over a very critical issue that required one position,” Wandayi said.
The Ugunja MP was trying to question Waiguru when Onyonka heckled him, angering nominated MP Oburu Odinga.
Obura also joined the pro-Waiguru faction, terming the youth who demonstrated in her support patriotic Kenyans supporting a noble cause. But the bitter exchange that ensued between Onyonka and Oburu worsened the situation.
