Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir plans to introduce Motion to impeach Interior CS Joseph ole Lenku for failure to tackle rising insecurity.

Kenya: Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku faces the threat of impeachment in the National Assembly following increasing cases of insecurity.

A group of MPs led by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir said they plan to introduce the Motion to have Lenku censured for failure to pre-empt terrorist attacks and other forms of crime that have rocked the country in recent months.

Monday, Nassir told The Standard he was working on the Motion and would start collecting signatures from members in the next few days.

“We are already lobbying for support from our colleagues. Most of us are united that Lenku has failed and has to go,” he said.

Although plans to introduce the Motion have been in the pipeline for the last two weeks, the MP said the Sunday night attacks in Mpeketoni, in which at least 48 people died is yet another indicator that Lenku had failed in his duties.

“The attacks in Mpeketoni have just reinforced our contention that he has no capacity to head the security docket. The spate of attacks the country has been experiencing should be worrying us all, including the top leadership of this country. People are desperate. We need to revolutionise our security systems if we are to protect our people. The buck stops with Lenku,” he said.

The Motion against Lenku, according to Nassir transcends political difference in the House.

“When terrorists attack, they do not discriminate against Jubilee supporters and members of the Opposition. What happened in Mpeketoni and what has been happening in other parts of the Coast and the rest of Kenya needs serious answers and the House has to take the lead,” he said.

However, an MP allied to the Jubilee coalition dismissed the intended Motion against Lenku, saying it was an exercise in futility.

Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu) claimed the Motion ‘will get nowhere’. “You can be sure a Motion sponsored by a member of CORD will not succeed. Let them bring it on and you will see what happens,” he said.

Should the Motion against Lenku materialise, it will be the second attempt to remove a CS from office.
