Kenya: Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula yesterday held talks with Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete at State House, Arusha where they discussed various issues including regional integration and security.

The two leaders said unity of purpose will be integral in the realisation of the East African Confederation, which they said will help foster economic growth for member states.

Mr Wetang’ula said Tanzania is a major stakeholder in the regional economic block and urged leaders to unite to avert the 1978-like disagreements that led to the collapse of the then East Africa Community.

He thanked President Kikwete for his commitment in ensuring the region is united as a way of attracting investors to the region. President Kikwete said Kenya and other East Africa states stand to gain more if the leaders unite for the sake of development.

He said the East Africa region would be an economic hub if all efforts were concentrated on the realisation of the regional confederation without anyone trying to play the big brother role.

Work together

On security, Kikwete urged political leaders to work together to end insecurity, saying matters security are not just a preserve of the Government but all stakeholders. Wetang’ula urged politicians to work together to end the senseless killings in South Sudan and escalating cases of insecurity in Kenya.
