National theatre set for Sh100m facelift

Nairobi, Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta will Monday commissioned the rehabilitation of the Kenya Cultural Centre incorporating the Kenya National Theatre.

The theatre is one of the landmark facilities earmarked for renovation as a way of commemorating 50 years of Kenya’s independence.

According to the Director of the Kenya Cultural Centre Aghan Odero Agan, the facility will be refurbished into an ultramodern theatrical performance space.

 “This initiative is under the auspices of Kenya@50 Legacy Projects bringing together the Government and private sector,” announced Mr Agan.

East Africa Breweries will undertake the cost of the full project to the tune of Sh100 million. During the ceremony, the President also laid a refurbishment emblem.

The planned rehabilitation of the facility is great news to the theatre fraternity who have had to look for private spaces to stage performances

The Kenya Cultural Centre has over the years earned a reputation for its dilapidated condition including rundown washrooms and broken lights.

This move is also a partial fulfilment of President Kibaki’s promise last April to construct an ultra-modern theatre and a film studio.
