Police chief warns of rising boda boda accident deaths in Kisii

Kisii County has recorded the highest number of fatal accidents involving boda boda operators, a police report indicates.

County Police Commander Simon Kiragu says the area records an average of 20 to 30 fatal traffic accidents involving boda bodas every month.

Speaking in Kisii town during a road safety training for boda boda operators, Kiragu attributed the high rate of accidents to alcoholism and failure to observe traffic rules by riders.

“Most riders break traffic rules. They carry up to four passengers, compromising their safety. Other riders drink while at work while their motorcycles are not insured. Helmets are meant to be used by both the rider and the passenger,” noted Kiragu.

The riders were sensitised on benefits of complying with traffic rules to reduce deaths.

They were urged to make use of personal protective equipment like helmets and reflective jackets.

The officer noted that passengers were uncomfortable wearing helmets due to their design and called on manufacturers to come up with those that have disposable inner covers.

“Some passengers fear contracting skin diseases by sharing helmets. If correctly worn, they can significantly reduce fatalities in case of accidents,” he added.
