Radio journalist Joshua arap Sang celebrated his 41st birthday on the eve of the start of his trial at the ICC.
And the magnitude of the hurdle to prove his innocence at The Hague-based court appeared to weigh down on him going by a Facebook post he made on this account.
He appeared to suggest that the day’s significance had slipped his mind as he prepared to defend himself against charges of crimes against humanity.
“Wow, imagine it was my birthday yesterday 9/9/2013. Thank God I am now one year older,” read the post made yesterday before the trial commenced. On Sunday, Sang wrote that he had arrived safely at The Hague and thanked Kenyans for their prayers. “We are safely in The Hague and the weather is favourable for now. Asante Jehovah kwa safari njema (Thank you God, for a safe journey). Thank you Kenyans, for your prayers,” he said.

But even as he prepared to face his accusers, Sang could afford to crack jokes, saying he was not amused that fellow journalists did not accompany him to the Netherlands.
