Youngster Naomi Wafula affirmed her prowess in golf as she braved spirited challenge to bag yet another title on Sunday.
Wafula, Kenya’s top ranked junior lady golfer, retained the Kenya Amateur Ladies Match Play held over the weekend at Royal Golf Club after she easily dismissed Joyce Van Tongoren of Karen Golf and Country Club 7-5 in the final match.
It has been a remarkable winning streak for Naomi Wafula, playing off Handicap four. She has clinched five titles in the past three weeks alone.
That explains her remarkable play over the weekend, which saw her dominate the Kenya Orient Insurance sponsored championship finals taking the title with five holes to go.
Speaking after receiving the champions trophy from Mercy Kiana, Kenya Orient Insurance Assistant General Manager, Naomi said this is a special tournament for her and she would like continue improving to beat a previous feat, where she won seven times at the Sigona Ladies Open.
Set target
“This is one of the events I would like to win as many times as possible. I came here with the drive to win’’ she said.
Naomi, a member of the Rose Naliaka Golf Foundation, had qualified for the final after beating her colleague in the Foundation Mercy Nyanchama 6-5 in the semi-finals. In the other penultimate play, Van Tongeren scored a narrow 1-0 against Christina Andersen.
In the silver division championship, Eldoret’s Esther Chumo beat Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairperson Dorcas Mbalanya at the 18th hole after another narrow victory against Anne Chubi in the semis. Mbalanya had beaten Royal deputy lady captain Lucy Awiti 4-2.
The bronze title went to Eldoret with Catherine Nkatha beating R. Ikuta 1-0. Ladies foursomes title was won by Joyce Wafula and Mwongeli Nzioka on 32 points.
They edged out Agnes Nyakio and Loice Akinyi by one point. The subsidiary title went to Mary Monari with a score of 35 points beating Maria Chebukati.
