Lira, Uganda: Tartar football girls’ team finally realised their dream of lifting the regional silverware after they beat Solidarity of Rwanda 5-4 on post-match penalties as the curtains came down on the  East African Secondary School Championships at Lango College here in Lira.

Tartar scored through Teresa Engesha, Robai Kebebi, Abigael Cherotich, Pauline Musungu with Olivia Chepkemei scoring the winning goal.

Solidarity started well scoring their first four penalties through Grace Mutesi, Claire Uruwamuhoro, Nadia Uneza and Ann Mary. Chadia Uwanahire hit the cross bar to give Tartar 5-4 advantage.

Tartar captain Musungu said: “We didn’t expect the match to extend to penalty shootouts. It turned out to be a tough one for us.”

Olympic carried home the bronze medal following their 2-0 victory over Ecotec of Rwanda in the third and fourth play-off.

In boys’ category, Upper Hill lost 3-2 against Grinti of South Sudan in bronze contest to finish fourth overall at the Championships.

Upper Hill assistant coach Joseph Makokha indicated that all though they did not win the tournament, his team showed great improvement in terms of performance compared to last year.

“Our team was eliminated at preliminaries last year but we have managed to play in semis on this occasion,” said Makokha.

“We’re not going to waste time but resume training immediately in readiness for the new season,” Makokha said.

In 15s rugby, Kakamega High retained the title after trouncing compatriots Kangaru 66-0 in a fast-paced final match.

The match was stopped with 23 minutes to full time since Kakamega attained the 60-point mark without a response from Kangaru.

Kakamega try scorers were: Alvin Otieno who touched down three times, Edgar Khafumi (two) while Emmanuel Sakari, Billy Esabwa and Andrew Alusa contributed one  try each.

St Mary’s Yala lost the battle of saints after they went down 8-7 against St Mary’s Kisubi in a closely fought play-off.

Parvin Rugambwa scored a penalty for Kisubi while Simon Dnungu added a try for the winning team. Yala replied through Lawrence Oloo’s try.
