In 15s rugby, after thrashing all opponents with an average of 60 points at group stage, Kakamega found their match in St Mary’s Yala who took them to task before winning the semi-final encounter with a labored 16-6 victory to qualify for the final.
Kakamega found it hard to penetrate Yala’s back row and coach Biko Ashimosi had to change tact to score.
Unlike in previous matches where Kakamega first goals came from tries, here it was a penalty conversion from Billy Esabwa that put them ahead 3-0 after struggling for 12 minutes.
Esabwa would then score a drop goal to give Kakamega 6-0 lead at half time.
Edgar Khafumi and Mike Mwende then converted a try each, Khafumi converted one while Rodgers Gworo scored two penalties in the second half to save the day for Kakamega.
