Nakuru County: The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has said poachers are now using guns fitted with silencers to kill wildlife.

KWS Director William Kiprono said yesterday it has become difficult to detect poaching in reserves due to the use of sophisticated firepower and satellite tracking systems to locate wildlife.

He said poachers are now targeting rhinos and not elephants as witnessed before.

“Rhino horns are now more in demand than elephant tusks and that will affect the endangered rhino species,” said the KWS boss, adding that there are about 1,000 rhinos in the country. Lenient laws are also being blamed for the continued menace.

“We hope the new Wildlife Bill which is still in Parliament will ensure stiff penalties,” added Kiprono.About 150 poachers have been arrested and are facing charges as part of a joint effort between different security personnel.
