An assistant chief in Limuru, Kiambu County, has been linked to the death of a man he caught allegedly stealing maize on his farm.
Peter Njenga Muigai of Karanjee sub-location was whisked away by police after angry villagers threatened to lynch him following the death of Nemwel Ocharo.
According to some of the locals, Ocharo went home and found his family had nothing to eat. He proceeded to the chief's farm, where he was attacked with an arrow and a machete.
“ When Ocharo went to his farm, the chief shot him with an arrow. He then advanced towards the victim and slashed him with a panga on the neck before raising the alarm after releasing Ocharo was dead,” said one of the villagers who spoke anonymously.
Upon sensing that the gathering crowd, angered by his action, intended to set on fire his family and homestead, Njenga alerted officers at Tigoni Police Station, who responded, rescuing and rushing the chief to Tigoni hospital.
Limuru sub-county Assistant County Commissioner Mbaisi Kihima assured residents that action will be taken against the chief, and urged them not to breach the peace.
