County summons former chief officers over cash

The Murang’a County Assembly has summoned former chief officers who served in the defunct county council to explain how the handing over was conducted.

The officers have been summoned to explain how millions of shillings were irregularly withdrawn from bank accounts that had been ordered closed, as well as missing public property.

Yesterday, the assembly’s Public Investment and Accounts Committee (Piac) heard from former chief officers who served in the Murang'a county council how Sh16 million was withdrawn to renovate county headquarters and the county assembly.

The committee chaired by Erick Kamande heard from former clerk Joseph Muthamia and treasurer Bonaya Nkondo how the money was withdrawn and spent after March 4, last year.

There was confusion during the session as the former officers claimed to have submitted the handing over reports but could not produce supporting documents.

Mr Kamande said they would recommend prosecution of those found to have misappropriated money.
