The Seattle Seahawks are the new Super Bowl champions.
The Seahawks took the Vince Lombardi trophy in convincing fashion routing the Denver Broncos 43-8 on Sunday night.
The Seahawks ran into the New York Met life stadium as underdogs but buoyed by the number one defense in the National Football league (NFL) shut out Broncos Quarterback Peyton Manning in the first half.
“We’re not sleeping tonight,” an elated Pete Carroll told the media. “We’re staying up all night because this party’s gonna get started as soon as you guys let me go.”
Carroll, long vilified as just a “college coach” who had been fired twice by NFL teams proved his credentials with a superb defense playbook and an effective offense spearheaded by quarterback Russell Wilson that delivered Seattle’s first super bowl trophy.
All through the regular season, the Broncos had proved they would ultimately be the team to beat finishing with a 13-3 record and the overall number one seed in the AFC championship conference.
It was the first time in years that two number one seeds from either conference had met for the penultimate football game.
The Seahawks had finished the season with an 11-2 record.
Seattle came out with guns blazing with the defense making iconic Broncos quarterback Manning feel the heat from the word go.
Broncos’ Manny Ramirez’s threw a snap over Manning’s head and forced teammate Knowshon Moreno to dive on the ball in his own end zone for a safety and Seattle’s first two points – and the fastest ever in the super bowl.
For the Broncos, it was downhill from there and they failed to convert any third down conversions until the third quarter.
Their dismal performance was buoyed by two valuable interceptions on Manning.
Two quick field goals
Seattle came away with two quick field goals before finding the end zone twice for two touch downs that pushed the score to 22-0 at half time.
It was the most lop-sided super bowl game since the Baltimore Ravens routed the New York Giants 34-7 in 2001.
Denver went to the locker rooms buried in an avalanche of disappointment.
But they had 30 minutes during half time to reflect and find some magic to pull out in the second half.
Meanwhile during the half time show, while 30-second television commercials sold for as much as $2.5m were aired, singer Bruno Mars rocked the stadium packed with 82,000 fans with a solo act that included his hit song “Treasure”. He was complemented by rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Any hopes that the Broncos could return in the second half and instil life into their faltering game were extinguished when Seahawks’ Percy Harvin returned an 87 yards kickoff to effectively end the game.
By the end of the third quarter, Broncos were grasping at straws and the final outcome solidified Seattle’s first super bowl victory in franchise history.
