Five people died in separate incidents in Makueni County as heavy rains continued to pound in the region.Three people died when a bus in which they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a trailer on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.Two others died in Kilungu district when their house was hit by mudslide following a heavy down pour on Friday night.
According to Makindu OCPD Sarah Dancan, the accident occurred about 3am on River Makindu river bridge, some 150metres from Makindu town.She said the driver of the Crown Coach bus was reportedly trying to overtake the trailer on top of the bridge but changed his mind on realising danger was lurking.The police chief told The Standard on Saturday that the bus driver then decided to return to his lane but hit the trailer before rolling. Both drivers escaped unscathed.“One passenger died on the spot while the other two including a four-year-old child died on arrival at the nearby Makindu district hospital”, she said.
She described scene as a black spot and urged motorists to avoid overtaking carelessly to avoid accidents on the highway.Makindu Medical Superintendent Dr Issac Munyalo said they received ten victims with serious injuries and admitted them at the hospital’s emergency wing. He said 30 others were treated for minor injuries
