The Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company (Mowasco) says the water shortage that has hit the town and its environs for the last three days has been caused by power outage.

Mowasco Managing Director Moses Kinya says the shortage had been caused by power outages in Baricho.

"The shortage that has been experienced for the last three days is due to the maintenance of power lines near Mombasa cement by the Kenya power and Lightning (KPLC), which started on Wednesday," said Kinya.

He said the most affected areas are Nyali, Shanzu, Kisauni and the Coast General Hospital but said his company put enough measures to ensure that water is supplied to the affected areas using collapsible water tanks.

"We have eight tanks strategically located on the island and in Kisauni area. At the Coast General Hospital, we supply water using tankers," he added.

The blackout has also caused water shortage in Kilifi. Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (Mawasco) Managing Director Johnson Randu told reporters that there has not been any pumping of water for the last two days at the Baricho Water Works.

Long distances

KPLC’s Malindi Regional Manager Mang’era Moronge told the Press last night that a major breakdown had occurred along the Kilifi-Baricho line but engineers had not managed to locate the actual fault, which is thought to be in Dzikunze in Ganze District.

The residents have been walking long distances for the commodity.
