A 35-year-old man was yesterday arrested in Githumu Village in Murang’a County after he was caught defiling his eight-year-old daughter.

The suspect was caught sexually assaulting his daughter by his wife when she returned home from a nearby market on Wednesday evening.

He was frogmarched to the police station by angry neighbours.

Local administrators

A mob was restrained by local administrators from lynching the suspect.

Kandara OCPD Wilson Kosgey said the wife of the suspect raised the alarm that attracted neighbours who turned up and beat the suspect.

The suspect was locked at Githumu Police Station as the police began investigations.

“The suspect is being interrogated and we hope to take him to court on Friday,” said Mr Kosgey, as he regretted increased cases of sexual offences in Kandara.

He commended neighbours for their decision not to lynch the suspect, saying the rule of law must be observed.

Kosgey encouraged families not to shy away from reporting sexual offences to the police.

Report cases

He said incidents of rape, defilement and bhang smoking had risen in the area and urged locals to report culprits.

And women leaders in Kandara called for assistance from experts in counselling victims of sexual offences.

Mary Wanja said many rape victims experienced psychological trauma as a result of the ordeal they went through.

“We are seeking organisations that will counsel our girls who are raped by their fathers and uncles. They are disturbed and require assistance from community leaders,” she said.

Alcohol and drug abuse, and moral decay have been blamed for fuelling the vice.
