Lake Region’s Asumbi Teachers College will seek to extend their basketball dominance as this year’s Kenya Teachers Colleges Sports Association national games start tomorrow.
Asumbi will be defending the men and women’s basketball trophies for the sixth and seventh successive times at Machakos Teachers College.
Asumbi’s women team first won the title in 2009, while their male counterparts grabbed it in 2010. From then, none of them has been eager to let go of the title. It will not be any different this year. Last year, the women’s side defeated Kilimambogo of Aberdare Region 72-17 in the final, while their men conquered Islamic Teachers Training College of Coast 116-56 to extend their reign.
STATUS QUO
Asumbi coach Paul Odok said this year will be no different as they seek to maintain the status quo.
“We have fought to achieve this feat. My players are determined to remain as champions and that is our motivation.”
He, however, said despite being the championships’ favourites, they will not underrate any team.
“We have won before, but this is a totally different year because other teams have made progress. I can’t write off any side or push my players into a comfort zone. The fight is on,” he said.
Asumbi will also seek to defend the women’s hockey, volleyball and netball titles. They also won men’s volleyball crown. Asumbi beat Eregi 3-1 in a penalty shootout to lift last year’s women hockey trophy.
