Kakamega County Referral Hospital received drugs worth Sh32 million from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority. County Executive for Health Peninah Mukabane received the drugs on behalf of the hospital.
During the ceremony last week, Mukabane urged residents to seek medical attention at health facilities across the county to ease pressure on the county’s referral hospital.
In another ceremony last week, Kakamega County Referral Hospital conducted a ground breaking for a Sh200 million renovation. The project will include new facilities to elevate the institution to a teaching and referral hospital.
The work is divided into three phases expected to last 36 months. The renovation is expected to make the hospital better equipped to deal with referral cases from the ten sub-county hospitals in Kakamega.
Ms Mukabane told The Standard on Sunday the projects will run concurrently and will start with phase three.
“We will start with the phase that involves tarmacking parking lots in the hospital, putting up walkways, renovating water tanks and pumps and working on worn out roofs,” she said.
This phase is expected to cost Sh38 million and last nine months. It will also include putting up new doctor’s flats and renovating the existing ones.
“We will admit more doctors in this facility, including some to train medics and others who will be here to learn, hence the need to build more houses,” said Mukabane.
Phase two will include piping, electrification and morgue expansion and renovation, whereas the other phase will involve constructing new wards and renovating the existing ones.
