Nyeri, Kenya: Police in Mukurwe-ini Sub County are investigating two women from Kiuu village over allegations that one of them had sold her new born baby to a neighbor for Sh7000.
Virginia Wairimu Mwangi, a mother of four allegedly said that she was unable to care for her children and had entered an agreement with her friend to assist her care for the child.
According to Mukurweini OCPD Beatrice Kimoning, police received a report from the local chief that 52 year old Eunice Wangechi was nursing a new born baby girl.
"From the preliminary report, the villagers became suspicious when they saw the elderly woman with a new born," Kimoning said.
The chief and the local administration police questioned Ms Wangechi who later confessed that the child belonged to her neighbor and they had an agreement with Wairimu that she would take care of the child
Harry Thuku ,52 who was in a relationship with Ms Wangechi said that she had been lying about her age and claimed that she was only 42 years old.
"I have been in a relationship with her for the last one year, she told me she was pregnant about nine months ago and I believed her, I am surprised to hear that the child is not hers,"Thuku said.
Thuku who was also at the police station explained that she called him on Monday night and said she was in labour and had gone to Nyeri referral hospital.
"I tried to enquire if I should take her to hospital but she refused and switched off her phone, she came back to Mukurweini the next day with a new born baby but I did not know it was not hers,"Thuku insisted.
"I didn't know she was 52 years and the police have confirmed her age but I was not part of the agreement between the two women,"Thuku said.
Police said that the two ladies had already altered some of the documents such as the pre natal health cards.
Wangechi insisted that she was trying to help the friend.
Kimoning said that the police will question the women and conduct further investigations.
