Goalkeeper Fredrick Onyango saved the day for Gor Mahia from marauding Mohoroni Youth strikers in the second half as K’ogallo secured a 2-0 victory in a fast and entertaining Kenyan Premier League match at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru on Saturday.
Man of the match Onyango (custodian) saved four clear chances which could have turned the tide on the former champions.
Ugandan import Dan Senkuruma chipped the ball over Muhoroni Youth custodian Gaddy Omondi from a goalmouth melee to draw the first blood for K’ogallo in the 12th minute. Seven minutes later, striker Rama Salim beat two defenders, passed the ball to unmarked Kevin Omondi who tapped into the net for second goal to lead 2-0 at the break.
Sofapaka failed to overcome a stubborn Homeboyz side as the two teams fought to a barren draw at Nyayo Stadium yesterday.
The Kakamega side were determined to get something from this match if only to get off the bottom of the standings. They started strongly winning a first minute corner which Duncan Ochieng’ saved.
But as the match progressed, it was Sofapaka who settled faster and got more chances. First Bob Mugalia who was back from injury shot directly at the Homeboyz goalkeeper John Waw on the half hour mark. Ten minutes later, Obadiah Tarumbwa was denied by Waw from a point blank effort. In another match played at the same venue, champions Tusker failed to go past Ulinzi Stars after the match ended in a barren draw.
Karuturi Sports failed to hang onto their lead allowing Western Stima to rally from a goal down and them 1-1 in Naivasha. Andrew Murunga had put Karuturi ahead in the 8th minute after connecting perfectly with a Zzinda Hussein cross from the right flank.
Zzinda remained a thorn in the Stima defense coming close on several occasions in the first half. Stima should have gotten an equalizer just before the half time whistle but Hesbon Mauda’s goal bound shot was kept out for fruitless corner.
Dennis Onkangi ensured Stima got something from the match with a perfect header in the 47th minute.
In Chemelil, fatigued Super 8 semi-finalists Chemelil Sugar were held to a 1-1 draw by opponents Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).
The first-half of the thrilling fixture and well officiated by Thika-based referee Raphael Nduati was closely contested by both the bankers and Chemelil Sugar.
Chemelil Sugar wasted valuable scoring chances during the first-half with the bankers exerting almost equal pressure against the millers.
On resumption, KCB took the lead in the 47th minute through John Keli who latched on a pass by teammate John Ngugi. Chemelil Sugar counter-attacked to level the score through Steve Wakanya in the 67th minute, after connecting a cross by lanky Smith Ouko.
