Staff at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) will get a pay raise of 41 per cent if a negotiated agreement is effected next month.

The increment will be spread in two years at 29 per cent this year and 12 per cent in 2014, according to the agreement seen by The Standard.

The middle- and low-level employees are now waiting for the industrial court to approve the agreement.

Also increased are subsistence, house and leave allowances, and medical cover.

The increments cater for employees between job groups M7 to M17. The lowest paid in job group M17 will earn Sh3,000 up from Sh2,700.

Their house allowances have been increased from Sh17,000 to Sh24,000 while leave allowances will go up to 40 per cent of basic salary.

The highest paid in the category M7 will earn Sh81,900 up from Sh65,290.

House allowances in this group have shot up from Sh17,000 to Sh24,000, while leave perks will rise to 60 per cent of the basic salary, according to the MoU signed between MTRH and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions and Hospital Workers.

Other increments, which will be backdated to July last year, include job group M16 from Sh11,370 to Sh14,263, M15 (Sh13,140 to Sh16,483), M14 (Sh16,080 to Sh20,171), M13 (Sh21,304 to Sh26,724) and M12 (Sh24,662 to Sh30,936)

Others are M11 (Sh29,918 to Sh37,529), M10 (Sh41,590 to Sh52,170), M9 (Sh45,880 to Sh57,552) and M8 (Sh55,840 to Sh70,046).

Medical cover for all groups will now be Sh200,000 for inpatient and Sh100,000 for outpatient. The cover previously stood at Sh100,000 and Sh50,000 for inpatient and outpatient.

Other allowances have been increased to reflect those earned by fellow employees in stations like Nairobi.

This comes as a relief to MTRH staff who have on several occasions protested against their low pay compared to that of their counterparts at the Kenyatta National Hospital, the only other referral facility.

MTRH not only admits referrals from within Western Kenya but also neighbouring countries like South Sudan and Uganda.
