An ICT consultancy firm in collaboration with Kenya Water Industry Association plans to facilitate a water sensitisation seminar.

The seminar which is expected to commence on 30th July aims at building capacity among the management of KWIA in use of GIS as decision making tool. The technology will result in greater efficiency in water delivery service and increase operational efficiency.

This comes at a time when Kenya is faced with challenges in providing clean and affordable water to all its citizens.

However, the water management in Kenya is yet to embrace the modern technologies like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis of the various components of water drilling that include topographical maps, soil types, aquifer characteristics and rainfall patterns.

“The combination of GIS technology and already existing data on wells that have been drilled will give members of KWIA a tool to work with in the course of their duty by getting attributes like location of the nearest well from a planned drilling site,” said George Oloo Executive Officer of Kenya Water Industry Association.

George also added that attributes of the area like depth of wells, water salinity, and possible water quality will be available from the click of a button.

The seminar is under a programme of SWAP-BFZ which aims at strengthening water associations in Kenya water Service Provider (WASPA) and KWIA.

“Our program has built partnership with the two water associations to improve on operational efficiency. Development of a management solution is one of the components” said Sabine Sibler the Programme Manager in Kenya.

The seminar will start on Monday 30th July to 1st August 2012 at Kenya Water Institute in South C.
