Several employees of Kenyatta University have moved to court seeking to eject Prof Olive Mugenda from the office of Vice Chancellor.
Wilfrida Itolondo, Mumah Solomon, Elena Korir, Martha Miyandazi and Fred Obare also want the High Court to allow them to apply for orders compelling the Government “to institute the process of appointment and to appoint the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University (KU)”.
Dr Itolondo and Dr Solomon are lecturers while Dr Korir is an assistant lecturer. Ms Miyandazi is the Halls Officer and Mr Obare an administrator.
In an urgent suit, they claim the office of the Vice Chancellor at the institution has not had a valid occupant since March 31, 2011, “a situation which is undermining due governance/administration of this important institution”.
They have sued the President, Attorney General, The KU Council, KU Chancellor and Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology.
They have named Mugenda, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) as we well as the National Cohesion and Integration Commission as interested parties.

Prof Mugenda, they argue, was appointed the institution’s Vice Chancellor effective April 1, 2006 and under the relevant laws, her term of office came to an end in March 2011.
“During her tenure of office and more particularly during the period she has been in illegal occupation of office of vice chancellor following the expiry of her term in March 2011, Mugenda has entrenched high level financial mismanagement, corruption, embezzlement of funds, abuse of office and bad governance at the university,” they claim.
