BS Mulavi spoke to Sevens team speedster Collins Injera on the IRB circuit
QUESTION: How does it feel to be the top scorer in the IRB circuit?
ANSWER: It feels great, it such a wonderful feeling, so all I will be trying to do, is keep scoring so that I can remain with this great feeling for as long as I possibly can.
QUESTION: What is your personal goal in the circuit?
ANSWER: My first goal is to make sure we win the game first, if I score that is a plus for me and the team, the team has been so great to me, so I have to return the favour.
QUESTION: Do you have a personal tally that you hope to achieve?
ANSWER: I have been scoring an average of five tries per tournament, so I just hope I can keep scoring the same number in each leg.
QUESTION: Is there any rugby figure that you emulate?
ANSWER: I think my team is just fantastic but if there is anyone I look up to it has to be Kal Tenana of New Zealand, he scored so many tries in his time and steered New Zealand to win the circuit, and hopefully I can do the same or even better.
QUESTION: Does being the top scorer add any pressure when you head into a game?
ANSWER: I usually feel little pressure because I usually don’t think about scoring to keep my record, I just play and scoring comes naturally, all I have to do is play my best and the rest usually falls into place.
QUESTION: Do you think the circuit has been competitive enough?
ANSWER: In the IRB circuit there is nothing like weak competition everyone is on form and is playing rugby at a very high level, so I think at the moment I am standing out among the best.
QUESTION: What do you think will be Kenya’s fortunes as they head for the last two legs of the series?
ANSWER: We will be aiming for the trophy. We have been slowly climbing the ladder and I think it is time we brought home a trophy, we now have the experience and it is very much possible if we believe in it.
QUESTION: What’s your motivation?
ANSWER: I just play so that I can be the best that I can be, I know that we carry the hopes of a nation so I play to make my country proud and fly our national flag up high.
QUESTION: Will you play in the ongoing Super Series?
ANSWER: I don’t think I will be able to play in the Super Series because I am very tired and I think I need a rest. I might only lend a hand of advice when needed but I don’t think my body can take another weekend of rugby so soon after playing at such intense levels.
QUESTION: Do you think you will ever leave your home club Mwamba RFC?
ANSWER: No I don’t see that ever happening I love Mwamba very much and I will continue playing for them until maybe I turn professional abroad, but I don’t think there is any other club in Kenya that can measure up to ‘kulabu.’ In fact I would advice all other players to come and join Mwamba.
QUESTION: Have you been approached by any foreign clubs?
ANSWER: I don’t think I can answer that at this moment, for now I just want to keep it under the covers then one day it will all blow up, but I assure you things are looking up. For now let me just play for the national team and Mwamba.
QUESTION: Where do you see yourself in five years?
ANSWER: That is a very hard question as I tend to just live life by the minute; I just know that life for me will be much better than where I am now, because everything has been improving by the day, so I just let God know where I will be.
QUESTION: Where do you see the Sevens team in years to come?
ANSWER: The future generation looks very promising, as I have seen some young players playing very well as compared to us when we were their age, so the future is very bright. I am even a little bit envious, but I am just glad I helped to pave the way for them.
QUESTION: Who are the toughest opponents you have ever faced?
ANSWER: New Zealand are usually a very physical side, it is no fun playing against them but is very satisfying winning against the reigning champions. They give you very little breathing space and they have very solid tackles that make them a very challenging team to play against.
QUESTION: What would you like to say to the world?
ANSWER: I don’t have much, but to thank the fans for staying behind us, the union and sponsors for supporting us and the other players for enabling us to reach where we are.
