Recent happenings within the Judiciary are a pointer that the Western judicial system imposed on us has failed.

Looking at unfolding events today, I propose we should reinstate African customary laws. This would involve having a local council of elders to pass justice at grassroots level.

A good example is Rwanda where people’s tribunals called Gacaca courts were set up to settle cases following the 1994 genocide.

The enduring popularity of Sharia courts may also be seen from the same perspective.

As an alternative to the apparently ineffective police force, it is imperative that vigilante groups also be rejuvenated and streamlined.
