Kenyans yesterday registered mixed results as the curtains fell on the 23rd edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association  (FEASSA) games here in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Kesogon Mixed Senior School bagged their second regional girls' gong after an emphatic win against compatriots St Martha’s Mwitoti in a final match played at the Morogoro Teachers Training College.

While the Kenyan girls ruled, ACK Chepsaita went down fighting against Uganda’s Namugongo Secondary and Vocational College to settle for silver as Kenya surrendered the boys’ volleyball title won by Cheptil in 2025.

Keen to end their year on a high after dominating local rivals, Kesogon continued with their good run, lifting the regional gong without dropping a set.

Kesogon coach John Marani was over the moon, saying they had accomplished their objectives for the year.

“I’m very happy that we met all our 2026 targets. When we won silver at both the national and East Africa games last year we started preparing for this year’s championships and also set goals and I’m glad that our efforts have paid off," said Marani.

Going against familiar opponents, Kesogon were favourites on paper and court, having dominated their peers from the Zonal level back home to the East Africa final.

They swept their challengers at all levels of competition as they looked to reclaim the regional title, they had won in 2024 but lost to bitter rivals Kwanthanze Mixed Senior School last year.

They controlled the game from the onset, forcing Mwitoti, who returned to the regional stage after two years in the cold, to play catch-up throughout the encounter.

They bagged the first set 25-19 despite Mwitoti’s relentless efforts to contain them. Kesogon then totally outplayed Mwitoti to take the second and third sets 25-18 and 25-13 to assume the throne.

In the boys' contest, national silver medallists ACK Chepsaita wound their year with regional silver after falling to Uganda’s Namugongo in a breathtaking five-set final clash. Chepsaita put up a spirited fight coming from behind twice to draw level but were edged out in the decisive fifth set.

Namugongo took the first set 25-18 but the Kenyans recovered to snatch the second 25-13 to level matters 1-1. The Ugandans then fought gallantly to restore their lead 25-21 with the Kenyans responding by taking the fourth set 25-22 to set the stage for the tie-breaker.

The Kenyan boys fought tooth and nail but were defeated by the more experienced Ugandans as they took the fifth set 16-14 to seize the trophy.

Rwanda’s Nyanza Technical Secondary School and GS Indagaburezi completed the podium after beating Chesamisi Boys and Bukedea Comprehensive School in the third-place play-offs.

In football, East Africa powerhouse St Mary’s Kitende from Uganda beat their hosts Morogoro Secondary School 2-1 to win their record 15th East African crown. Kitende assumed the reins from their compatriots Bukedea who were eliminated at the group stage.

Rines Secondary School from Uganda edged out compatriots Amus College 4-3 in post-match penalties to lift the girls’ trophy.
