Senegal and DR Congo bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, July 1, after surrendering winning positions in dramatic Round of 32 defeats.

DR Congo came close to a major upset against England in Atlanta, taking a shock 1-0 lead after just seven minutes when Brian Cipenga fired a low shot past Jordan Pickford.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced several crucial saves to preserve the advantage, while Yoane Wissa struck the woodwork as the Congolese threatened to extend their lead.

However, England captain Harry Kane inspired a late comeback, heading home in the 75th minute before curling a second into the top corner 11 minutes later to secure a 2-1 victory.

Despite the heartbreaking exit, the 46th-ranked DR Congo made history by recording their first-ever World Cup goals, points and wins.

Meanwhile, Senegal suffered an equally painful collapse against Belgium after throwing away a 2-0 lead.

Habib Diarra put the Lions of Teranga ahead in the 23rd minute before Ismaila Sarr doubled the advantage early in the second half.

Senegal looked set for the Round of 16 until Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans scored late in normal time to force extra time.

Tielemans then completed Belgium's remarkable comeback from the penalty spot, sealing a 3-2 victory.

"We're disappointed. We had a good first half, but it wasn't enough. A match lasts 90 minutes, and we're devastated," Diarra told Africa News.

"When you're on the pitch, you have to give your all, and that's not what we did. We've only got ourselves to blame."

DR Congo coach Sebastien Desabre also lamented his side's exit.

"We're disappointed because we really believed we could do it. We played well, but towards the end we conceded two chances and one of the world's best players scored twice against us. It's a shame," he said.

As the knockout stage continues, Morocco have already booked their place in the Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.

Algeria, Egypt, Cape Verde and Ghana remain in contention for places in the next round.
