President William Ruto has added a personal piece of history to State House, unveiling a framed photograph from his school days that captures his earliest leadership roles.
The vintage portrait highlights Ruto's formative years and includes records of his extracurricular activities, showing he served as a hostel captain, vice chairman of the Christian Union, secretary of the debating club, and an active volleyball player.
The frame also bears the inscription: "God Bless You."
The display has sparked mixed reactions.
Supporters described it as a powerful reminder of Ruto's rise from humble beginnings to the country's highest office, while critics questioned the appropriateness of displaying personal memorabilia in a national institution.
On Facebook, Emanuel Nyandiwa wrote, "A powerful reminder that great leaders also have humble beginnings. Seeing President Ruto's childhood photo at State House is a reflection of the journey from humble beginnings to the highest office in the land. Never despise your beginnings, your story can change. Keep believing, keep working, and keep moving forward."
Another user, Mandela Nelson, commented: "Even if he decides to mount a photo of a snake, the speed of going to Sugoi remains the same."
The display comes months after the multi-billion shilling renovation of State House Nairobi, which transformed the 118-year-old building by replacing its colonial-era red roof with a modern white facade featuring a flat roof and grand front columns.
The refurbishment, which allocated about Sh680 million to the main residence, alongside additional funding for State lodges in Eldoret, Mombasa and other counties, attracted widespread public scrutiny.
While the government defended the upgrades as necessary modernisation, critics questioned the cost and the decision to alter a historic national landmark during a period of economic hardship.
